Xda-Developers | Huawei’s foldable 5G smartphone will be announced next month

5G and foldable phones are all the rage at the minute, so what if we combine those two trendy features? Huawei plans to do just that and will be announcing their latest flagship device at MWC Barcelona next month. Their 5G foldable smartphone was announced at the end of the company's 5G launch event in Beijing earlier today. Richard Yu, CEO of the company's Consumer Business Group said: "We look forward to seeing you in Barcelona in February, where we will launch the world's first 5G smartphones with foldable screen" (can be heard at 1:12:29 in the video below).

For starters, it's likely a mistranslation that the company aims to launch more than one smartphone of that nature. Their Kirin 980 chipset will power the new smartphone, with the company's first 5G modem – the newly announced Balong 5000 – included as well. Foldable smartphones are coming from the likes of Samsung and Xiaomi, and Huawei wants a piece of the pie as well. ETNews reported way back in April of last year that the Shenzhen-based smartphone giant intended to launch its foldable smartphone in November of 2018, though obviously, that didn't pan out. Still, the company seemed to want to release theirs before Samsung. It appears that they may get to.

It is unknown how much Huawei's 5G foldable smartphone will retail for, but it's likely to be a lot. In the case of Samsung, it appears that their foldable smartphone will cost somewhere around $1700, a steep price to pay for a phone. If that's an indicator of pricing across the board, then it's very unlikely that we'll see these types of phones reach the hands of the average consumer any time soon.

There's a lot of phones getting shown off at MWC, and we're sure that Huawei won't be the only manufacturer with something cool and innovative on show. LG themselves will launch their own 5G device at MWC, while Vivo will show off their port-less smartphone too. There's a lot of cool technology getting launched in the next few months, and this is only the beginning.

Note: Huawei has stopped providing official bootloader unlock codes for its devices. Therefore, the bootloader of Huawei devices can't be unlocked, which means users cannot root or install custom ROMs.
